Heather Wallace is a detective for the Washington, DC police bureau.  On a chase after a sexual sadist, she finds herself in New Orleans.

Dante Prejean is the owner of goth club Inferno, and lead singer of the band with the same name.  His past is a mystery even to himself.

When their paths cross, Detective Wallace suspects Dante Prejean is the sadist.  That is, until Prejean starts getting messages from the killer saying “Wake up, S.”
